Simulations, whether real or “virtual”, have always been a part of military training and ultimately have led to battlefield supremacy.
Setting up realistic training scenarios to address the spectrum of military and law enforcement mission sets is resource and time intensive because there is a direct relationship between how realistic the training is and saving lives in a lot of cases. Teams can get an unlimited number of reps at significantly lower cost using immersive virtual environments and put the human focus back into the training experience.
Law enforcement and military members and teams have a multitude of missions they have to demonstrate competency in, some of which they might not encounter for years at a time but will be expected to be able to handle. VR scenario based training for government allows for more reps per officer and team across a greater variety of scenarios in less time and with less associated cost than on the job training or scenario based training using role players.
VR scenario training also allows for recording and scoring so baselines can be established and improvement from baseline response can be measured for both individuals and teams.
Immersive technologies are being used in the military for:
Simulation Based Learning (SBL) or Simulation Based Training (SBT)
Treatment of PTSD
Recruiting new soldiers
Helping soldiers get back to duty sooner
Engaging with civilians
